The Goodness and Beauty of Creation in the Eyes of the Mystics

Prof Bernard McGinn

Leader

Prof Bernard McGinn

Bernard McGinn is the Naomi Shenstone Donnelley Professor emeritus at the Divinity School of the University of Chicago, where he taught for thirty-four years before retiring in 2003. He has written extensively on spirituality and mysticism, including his nine-volume, The Presence of God: A History of Western Mysticism (1991-2021).

Some people see mystics are “world-deniers,” but this is a grave misconception. Many of the great mystics have written movingly about how God’s good creation, especially as seen in its natural beauty, reveals the soul’s oneness with the Creator. In this talk Bernard will consider a few of these mystics from different ages.

Some people see mystics are “world-deniers,” but this is a grave misconception. Many of the great mystics have written movingly about how God’s good creation, especially as seen in its natural beauty, reveals the soul’s oneness with the Creator. In a brief talk only a few of these mystics can be considered. Bernard will consider a handful from different ages (e.g, Augustine, Hildegard of Bingen, Francis of Assisi, John of the Cross, Teilhard de Chardin).
